About Sushila Burgess
I am half-Indian, half-English, and perhaps as a result am inspired by images of a mystical, magical and unreal India populated by blue or yellow elephants, jewelled peacocks and women in embroidered red-and-gold saris. I grew up in rural Lincolnshire, studied French and Spanish at the University of Oxford in the late 1970s, then drifted into computer programming and now have a job as a software developer for the Bodleian Library, Oxford, while painting as a hobby.
In May 2011 I appeared on BBC TV on a talent show for artists called Show Me the Monet: I entered with my picture Bird People: the Chaffinch Family and got into the last 96 out of 1,200 entries. I also participated in a local arts festival, Oxfordshire Artweeks 2011, and was shortlisted in a competition to provide an image for the cover of the printed guide to the festival.
To see more of my artwork, visit my website. My paintings are also available printed out on T-shirts, mugs, bags and many other products, and as illustrations in an exciting magical adventure story for children aged about 5-8 years, Jasmine's Unicorn, available on Amazon. And Firefox users can decorate their web browser with FREE Personas for Firefox featuring details from my pictures.
I have always loved painting, but for years of my adult life I felt undermined by people's discouraging attitude, and did not produce any artwork. Then I started enviously eying and sneakily using my young daughter's art materials! Finally I decided I had better get some paints of my own! I started painting ceramic tiles to decorate my home, and those images are now in my Magic Country FAA gallery.
Next I wrote and illustrated a children's book called Jasmine's Unicorn, and the full-colour version of the illustrations can be seen here in my Jasmine and the Unicorns gallery, while the story itself (with black-and-white pictures) is available from Amazon and also Amazon UK.
My latest multi-picture project has been a series called 'Bird People': weird magic birds with human heads soar through a deep blue sky. Those pictures are in the Bird People, Mer People gallery.
I've recently been diverted from 'Bird People' onto a few other little odds and ends, though I plan to return to it soon. I did a painting of monkeys swinging through the trees at a friend's request, and am currently working on another mermaid picture combining undersea fantasy with nitty-gritty parental reality, to be called Mer Mum and Comb.
